Four-star quarterback Kamden Lopati signed with the Michigan Wolverines on Tuesday, ending a brief commitment to Illinois. The 6‑foot‑3 passer from Salt Lake City ranks No. 2 overall among the 2027 quarterback class, making him the highest‑rated recruit to join coach Kyle Whittingham’s staff since the coach arrived last season, and positions him as a potential starter by his sophomore year.

During his junior year at West High School, Lopati threw for 2,671 yards, 34 touchdowns and eight interceptions, numbers that propelled him onto national radars. After visits to Michigan, Notre Dame, Cal and Duke, he decommitted from Illinois on Monday, choosing Ann Arbor where offensive coordinator Jason Beck, a former Utah assistant, has cultivated a strong rapport with the prospect, and expressed confidence in offensive system.
