Judge blocks NCAA ban, Sorsby cleared for 2026 season

Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby secured a preliminary injunction on Monday, blocking the NCAA from barring him from practice or games this fall. Judge Ken Curry ruled the athlete would suffer a “probable, imminent and irreparable injury” without the order, allowing Sorsby to remain eligible for the 2026 season despite earlier ineligibility findings. The decision marks another rare judicial check on the NCAA’s enforcement authority.

Investigators uncovered that Sorsby wagered roughly $90,000 on professional and college events over four years, including 40 bets on Indiana football during his 2022 freshman season. The NCAA deemed him permanently ineligible and rejected Texas Tech’s appeal. Under the injunction, he must sit out the Red Raiders’ non‑conference matchups against Abilene Christian and Oregon State while continuing treatment for gambling and anxiety disorders.

The Red Raiders, defending Big 12 champions and 2025 College Football Playoff participants, now face a quarterback shuffle. Coach Joey McGuire may start transfer Kirk Francis for the opener while backup Will Hammond recovers from a torn ACL. The NCAA plans an appeal, but any ruling arriving after September 5 would have little impact on Texas Tech’s immediate campaign.
