IU Abuse Lawsuit Dismissed Statute

A federal judge dismissed a lawsuit Tuesday against Indiana University where former men's basketball players alleged sexual misconduct by team physician Dr. Bradford Bomba. The case was thrown out because the players' complaint fell beyond the two-year statute of limitations. Players had claimed they didn't realize Bomba's actions constituted abuse until 2024.

The Title IX lawsuit, filed in October 2024, accused university officials including former coach Bobby Knight of ignoring Bomba's inappropriate rectal exams during physicals in the 1980s and '90s. An outside investigation commissioned by the university cleared Bomba of sexual misconduct last year. Bomba died in May 2023 at age 89.

Judge Tanya Walton Pratt ruled the players undermined their own argument by stating they knew decades ago that the abuse was "widely known among university staff" and officials had "authority to take corrective action." This differs from a successful Ohio State case where plaintiffs were within the statute because the clock started when they learned officials knew of misconduct but failed to act. The Indiana plaintiffs' attorneys said they were weighing options.
