How Injury Transformed Isa Torres Into Record-Breaking Hitter

Florida State shortstop Isa Torres has transformed into the most dominant hitter in college softball, entering Super Regional play with a .542 batting average — a staggering 106 points higher than the school record she set last season. She's already hit 16 home runs, nearly doubling her total from a year ago, with a 1.012 slugging percentage that's climbed nearly 500 points.

An unexpected collision in late February became the catalyst for her breakthrough. While fielding a line drive, Torres collided with Alabama's Marlie Giles at second base, suffering a concussion that forced her to miss eight games — the longest stretch away from softball in her career. The time away helped her realize she'd been too hard on herself.

She returned March 4 as a different player, becoming the first Florida State player to go 6-for-6 in a game, then breaking the NCAA record with 14 hits in 14 consecutive at-bats against Cal. She extended the streak to 16 before it ended, finishing with 23 consecutive plate appearances reaching base safely — the third-longest in NCAA history. She won ACC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, cutting her errors from nine last season to just one this year.
