Tennessee coach Josh Heupel has named true freshman Faizon Brandon as the Volunteers' starting quarterback. The 6-foot-4 pocket passer from Greensboro, North Carolina, secured the role after competing with second-year quarterback George Mac Intyre during the offseason.

Brandon will make his college debut against Furman on Sept. 5 ahead of a Week 2 visit to Georgia Tech on Sept. 12. Ranked No. 20 in the preseason AP Top 25 poll, he replaces former Vols quarterback Joey Aguilar following an 8-5 finish last fall.

Surrounded by eight returning starters, including 1,000-yard rusher De Sean Bishop and receiver Braylon Staley, Brandon steps into a potent offense. He joins former five-star Mike Matthews, who recorded 53 catches for 813 yards last season. As ESPN's No. 14 overall prospect in the 2026 cycle, Brandon was long considered the program's future leader.

A 2024 North Carolina Gatorade Football Player of the Year, Brandon posted a 35-1 high school record at Grimsley High School. Sources cite his elite upside as key to Heupel's decision. Mac Intyre and veteran Colorado transfer Ryan Staub remain on the depth chart behind the new starter.
