The Kansas City Chiefs restructured Patrick Mahomes' contract this week, creating $43.65 million in salary cap space ahead of the 2026 season, according to ESPN and multiple reports. The restructuring, first reported by Overthecap.com, converts $54.45 million of Mahomes' 2026 salary into a signing bonus, lowering his cap number to $34.65 million.

Kansas City had been more than $57 million over the salary cap after missing the playoffs this past season. The move comes as the Chiefs attempt to rebuild a roster that reached the Super Bowl in each of the previous three seasons. Mahomes, who underwent knee surgery in mid-December to repair two torn ligaments in his left knee, initially was set to count for $78.2 million against the cap in 2026.

The restructuring provides the Chiefs with crucial financial flexibility as they navigate free agency and prepare for the upcoming draft. With Mahomes recovering from surgery and expressing his desire to be ready for the 2026 season opener, the team can now focus on surrounding their star quarterback with the necessary talent to return to championship contention.
