Toronto Tempo coach Sandy Brondello was suspended by the WNBA for one game without pay after making an inappropriate comment about Angel Reese of the Atlanta Dream during the Dream’s 111-92 win over the Tempo. The broadcast captured Brondello addressing officials after Nyara Sabally was injured by Reese, during which she used a phrase that sounded like “protected species.” Zul‑Reese responded in a post titled “ARE WE SURPRISED?!” with a clown emoji.

Brondello, an Australian who has coached the national team since 2017, explained that “protected species” is a term used in Australian sports to express frustration over officiating. However, in American culture it has a history of derogatory usage toward Black people. She posted an apology on social media, accepting full responsibility and expressing deep regret for hurting a community she respects.

The incident will be discussed at a meeting between players and Commissioner Cathy Engelbert next week. Brondello will serve her suspension when Toronto hosts the Las Vegas Aces on Monday. The league emphasized that all personnel must uphold professionalism and respect.

Brondello’s first season with the Tempo follows eight years with the Phoenix Mercury and four with the New York Liberty, where she won championships.
