Mike Boynton Jr. has agreed to a two-year contract to become the new head men's basketball coach at Michigan. He takes over after Dusty May departed for the Dallas Mavericks last month. Boynton, who served as the interim coach, was previously the defensive coordinator under May and helped build the nation's top defense during Michigan's championship season.

Boynton's immediate priority was retaining the roster, and he succeeded. Nearly all key players, including projected starter Trey Mc Kenney and Final Four Most Outstanding Player Elliot Cadeau, have committed to staying. Incoming transfers J.P. Estrella and Moustapha Thiam have also reaffirmed their commitments, as has five-star recruit Brandon Mc Coy Jr.

The team's outlook is strong, with Michigan ranked No. 5 in ESPN's Way-Too-Early Top 25. The only uncertainty is guard L.J. Cason, who is recovering from an ACL tear. Boynton brings significant head coaching experience, having led Oklahoma State for seven seasons and guided them to the NCAA tournament in 2021 with Cade Cunningham.
