C.J. Gardner-Johnson was carted to the locker room after suffering a lower-body injury during Buffalo Bills training camp practice Saturday at St. John Fisher University. The veteran safety went down during an 11-on-11 period and was tended to by athletic trainers who examined his lower right leg/foot area. After testing his weight-bearing ability, he was supported off the field, not putting much weight on his right leg.

Teammates including left tackle Dion Dawkins checked on him. Dawkins said Gardner-Johnson could walk and put weight on his legs, adding "C.J. is a dog... if anybody's going to push through something the right way, it'd be C.J." General manager Brandon Beane visited Gardner-Johnson in the medical tent before he limped to a cart.

Gardner-Johnson, a free agent addition projected to start alongside third-year safety Cole Bishop, has been a vocal leader. Veterans Geno Stone and Damar Hamlin filled in with the first-team defense. Hamlin said, "I just said a quick prayer and I think he'll be all right... he'll find a way."
