Verlander's Farewell

Justin Verlander is progressing in his return from a hamstring injury, with the retiring ace and the Tigers hoping he can make one last start during a planned two-day celebration of his career.

The Phillies reinstated left-hander Tanner Banks from the 60-day injured list before Sunday's game against the Braves in Atlanta. Philadelphia also received encouraging news on star pitcher Jesús Luzardo, whose MRI showed no serious issues, though he won't throw for a couple of days while dealing with left shoulder stiffness. The Cubs activated Edward Cabrera from the 15-day IL, with manager Craig Counsell moving the right-hander to the bullpen for now. Pittsburgh placed rookie outfielder Esmerlyn Valdez on the 10-day injured list after he hurt himself running to first base.

Cole's Struggles

Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole could not make the proper adjustments to pitch deeper into Saturday's 12-2 loss to the Mets, and afterward the cerebral veteran said the cause for his latest poor outing was tough to pin down.
