World Series Preview
The Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays will meet in this year's Fall Classic, and ESPN's rankings place Rays shortstop Junior Caminero against Brewers outfielder Jackson Chourio in a head-to-head comparison of the rosters. Both small-market clubs have built their runs around depth and run prevention, a narrative that fits some of their traits better than others. Neither franchise has ever won a title, and a rare matchup between two never-champions guarantees a first-time winner. Milwaukee fans have waited decades to see their club in October, and a 1982 comparison highlights how much the game has changed since the Brewers last reached the Series. Superfan Dick Vitale, meanwhile, is predicting a Rays win in seven.
Rays Clinch the Pennant
Tampa Bay secured the American League pennant by beating the Guardians, with Caminero delivering his first career postseason home run off an All-Star pitcher and then taking a 38.7-second trot around the bases. Cleveland, meanwhile, saw its title drought reach 78 years after running out of gas in the championship series. The Rays' success has been credited to an organizational culture in which players trust the process regardless of circumstances.
Brewers and Oddsmakers
Milwaukee entered the postseason as long championship underdogs, a status that left sportsbooks carrying significant liability as both teams advanced to the Series. Ohio regulators, separately, banned a bettor who allegedly made violent threats against a Blue Jays manager. Bob Uecker's family said the late broadcaster would be "incredibly proud" of the current club. Fans who redeemed a 2015 promotion, however, have voiced frustration over the seating allotted for the Series.
Front Office and Managers
The Yankees and general manager Brian Cashman agreed to a new contract, with owner Hal Steinbrenner placing blame for the team's struggles on the offense. Manager Aaron Boone rejected calls for a culture change, insisting the clubhouse remains a strength. In Anaheim, Kurt Suzuki is out as Angels manager after one season and a 100-loss campaign, and interim GM Angel Mozeliak will not return in 2027. In Oakland, owner John Fisher hired a younger president of baseball operations, saying "the world is run by 31-year-olds today."
Free Agency and Player Movement
The qualifying offer for this year's free agents rose to $23.15M, up 5.1% from 2025. Japanese slugger Teruaki Sato, is seeking an MLB move through the posting system after a season in which his national team reached a major international final. Shohei Ohtani, for his part, will not require surgery, and the Dodgers say they "fully expect him to pitch next year."
Coming Up
The Brewers and Rays open the World Series to decide the first champion from either franchise. Ohtani's health and availability for 2027 will be closely watched by the Dodgers, who expect him to pitch next season.
