Cam Schlittler lowered his ERA to 1.95 with a dominant outing Sunday against the Mets, cementing his status as the clear-cut favorite for the American League Cy Young Award. Gerrit Cole, one of the most cerebral pitchers in the majors, could not adjust enough to pitch deep into Saturday's 12-2 loss to the Mets, and afterward admitted the cause for his latest poor outing was tough to pin down. Clarke Schmidt will be activated this week and rejoin the club as a reliever, 14 months removed from elbow surgery. Before Sunday's game, Derek Jeter reunited with Brielle Saracini, the daughter of a 9/11 victim, as members of the 2001 Yankees honored victims in a pregame ceremony that concluded with first pitches from Saracini and Sean McGuire, a married couple.

Red Sox

Payton Tolle opened with an immaculate inning, striking out the side on nine pitches in the first inning of Sunday's game against the Kansas City Royals. Willson Contreras returned to the lineup after being activated from the 10-day injured list and batted cleanup in the series finale.

Injuries & Roster Moves

The Diamondbacks designated Lourdes Gurriel Jr. for assignment, potentially ending the tenure of an outfielder who played a key role in their recent World Series run but struggled after tearing a hamstring. San Francisco's Rafael Devers will miss the rest of the season and may require surgery for a core muscle injury. Baltimore's Kyle Bradish landed on the 15-day IL with lower abdominal discomfort, effectively ending his season. Pittsburgh rookie Esmerlyn Valdez hit the 10-day IL after injuring his hamstring running to first base. Philadelphia reinstated left-hander Tanner Banks from the 60-day IL before Sunday's game against the Braves in Atlanta.

Jesús Luzardo underwent an MRI that revealed no serious issues, though the Phillies star won't throw for a couple of days while managing stiffness in his left shoulder.
