Modders have successfully installed Windows NT 4.0 on the Nintendo GameCube, pushing the 25-year-old console far beyond its original capabilities. The project builds on groundwork from Entii for Workcubes on GitHub and leverages the shared PowerPC architecture between the GameCube and Wii. A new build of Windows NT for PowerPC surfaced last year, enabling hobbyists to boot the 1990s operating system on the GameCube-to-Wii U generation of systems.

YouTube creator emu_kidid first demonstrated the software-side process in February 2025, followed by hardware-focused videos from Jiga Tech and Michael MJD in 2026. The installation involves removing the disc drive, installing a mod drive, and inserting an SD card through a memory card slot. Both creators achieved a working system, with Michael MJD running Solitaire and Jiga Tech integrating support for the ASCII GameCube keyboard controller and DK Bongo controller.

While practical applications remain limited, the mod showcases the ingenuity of the console modding community and highlights how Nintendo's restrictive stance on newer hardware has driven enthusiasts toward older, more accessible systems.
