Senator Dan Sullivan of Alaska has quietly backed President Trump’s tariffs in Washington, even as they roil the economy and anger consumers. Back home, however, he has largely avoided the issue while campaigning for re-election. His brother, Frank Sullivan, CEO of RPM International, has called the tariffs a major headache, citing government instability and economic volatility.

The company, which makes Rust-Oleum and Roto-Rooter, has adapted by relocating manufacturing, restructuring importer deals, and raising prices. Despite these challenges, RPM delivered its 52nd consecutive year of dividend increases, with Senator Sullivan holding up to $5 million in company stock. Democrats, including opponent Mary Peltola, are pushing hard on tariff-related price hikes, particularly in Alaska, which relies heavily on out-of-state imports.

The race remains tight, with both candidates positioning themselves on an issue that underscores broader economic concerns heading into the midterms.
