Prabowo Reshuffles Economic Team Amid Investor Concerns

President Prabowo Subianto’s recent economic team overhaul signals a return to stable policymaking after months of market concern. By replacing Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa with Suahasil Nazara and installing Destry Damayanti as central bank Governor, Indonesia aims to steady key institutions following significant capital outflows totaling $1.9 billion this year. Markets responded positively, with the rupiah appreciating around 3% from June lows and the Jakarta Composite Index entering a technical bull market. However, analysts caution that personnel changes alone are insufficient to address deeper structural concerns. Investors note that Nazara, a familiar face who previously served under both Joko Widodo and Prabowo, faces the challenge of financing the president's growth ambitions while preserving fiscal discipline. As George Boubouras of K2 Asset Management stated, the new appointees have good CVs, but markets require more open, transparent, and credible policy. The administration must continue addressing investor concerns to maintain credibility with the financial community, particularly as the rupiah has recovered and foreign funds have bought local bonds for four consecutive months.

The broader global context of rising debt and borrowing costs further complicates Indonesia's outlook. For overseas fund managers like Mark Nash of Jupiter Asset Management, Nazara’s appointment removes a key source of uncertainty. Still, Liza Camelia Suryanata of PT Kiwoom Sekuritas Indonesia advises against calling him 'SMI 2.0,' emphasizing the need to watch his independent operation and navigation of the government's political agenda.
