Since taking SpaceX public in June, Elon Musk has positioned the rocket company as the center of his business empire. Recent decisions, from limiting satellite internet in Ukraine to pledging shares for a government savings program, highlight his growing influence. On Tuesday, SpaceX reported strong second-quarter earnings as a public company, driven by AI and satellite internet growth.

Revenue for the quarter ending September 30 reached $14.5 billion, more than 2.5 times the $5.6 billion from the prior year. Profit totaled $4.4 billion, or 37 cents per share, compared to a net loss of $1.05 billion last year. These results exceeded Wall Street projections of $13 billion in revenue and 16 cents per share in profit.

Capital expenditures surged to $19.6 billion, nearly triple the $6.9 billion from a year earlier. SpaceX's AI spending, including the Grok chatbot and data centers, increased by $4.6 billion since last year. CFO Bret Johnsen stated the company is "building the infrastructure of the future with discipline." With 13.6 million Starlink subscribers and hundreds of thousands of enterprise customers, SpaceX's performance serves as a barometer for the broader AI industry.

Melissa Otto of S&P Global expects capital expenditures to reach nearly $195 billion by 2028 from about $70 billion this year. SpaceX shares rose over 2 percent in after-hours trading, trading above the $135 IPO price. The results offer clues to the sustainability of AI spending by data center companies like Core Weave and Oracle.
