A group of prominent open source developers and venture capitalist Konstantin Vinogradov have launched the Open Source Endowment, a nonprofit aiming to solve the chronic funding problem for open source projects. The initiative has attracted over 50 notable contributors including Thomas Dohmke, former GitHub CEO, and Mitchell Hashimoto, founder of HashiCorp, which sold to IBM for $6.4 billion. The newly established 501(c)(3) organization has already secured commitments exceeding $750,000.

Open source software forms the bedrock of modern internet infrastructure, yet up to 86% of developers work without compensation despite these tools constituting up to 55% of organizational tech stacks. Previous funding models like corporate donations and foundation grants have proven inconsistent, with many maintainers experiencing burnout. The OpenSSL Heartbleed disaster in 2014 exposed the risks when critical infrastructure relies on under-resourced volunteer developers.

The endowment plans to grow to $100 million in assets within seven years, using investment income to support projects based on user count and dependency levels. This approach would create sustainable funding without the corporate influence concerns that have plagued previous models. By establishing a permanent funding mechanism, the organization aims to ensure that critical open source projects receive the resources they need for long-term maintenance and development.
