London-based AI company Omnea is flipping the traditional workplace script by offering employees $250,000 in seed funding to launch their own startups after five years of service. Partnering with European angel fund Firedrop, the Omnea Future Founders Fund removes the stigma around side hustles, encouraging transparency instead of secrecy. CEO Ben Freeman argues this approach builds trust and attracts entrepreneurial talent.

The fund provides flexible funding structures: a baseline $250,000 against a $10 million valuation (2.5% equity) or an uncapped SAFE note. Final investment decisions come within 24 hours of a 30-minute pitch to Freeman and Firedrop founder Pietro Invernizzi. Accepted founders receive office space, operational support, and mentorship from Omnea's executive team.

This initiative serves as both a recruitment tool and cultural shift. With 15% of Omnea's 200-person workforce already comprising former founders, the company targets high-autonomy personalities who thrive on solving hard problems. Freeman, inspired by his own exit from Tessian, believes supporting employee exits creates better long-term loyalty than traditional retention tactics.

The fund leverages a network of 150+ elite investors, including former Stripe COO Claire Hughes Johnson and Asana COO Anne Raimondi. While no employees have officially launched yet, four have expressed interest. By openly incentivizing departures, Omnea signals it prioritizes talent development over ownership, betting that founder-type employees will drive greater innovation.
