AI Coding Tools Challenge SaaS Business Model

A major shift is underway in enterprise software as AI coding tools enable customers to build their own features rather than wait for vendors. A CEO recently revealed that one of their largest clients considered using AI to create a needed workflow internally, bypassing the traditional vendor development cycle. This scenario, once rare, is becoming increasingly common as enterprise customers gain coding capabilities.

For decades, SaaS companies built competitive advantage through feature depth and development velocity. The company that could ship faster and cover more use cases typically won. That model made sense when software creation was expensive and engineering capacity limited. A feature represented significant investment requiring planning, development, quality assurance, and support. Customers understood this process because alternatives were scarce. If they needed something badly enough, they could ask for customization, pay for it, or wait.

AI-assisted development is fundamentally changing this equation. When internal teams can describe a workflow and generate a usable version in days rather than quarters, the traditional feature concept begins to erode. The real question isn't whether AI will help companies build features faster - it clearly will. The more important question is whether the concept of a fixed feature as a product development unit starts to fade. In an AI-native environment, functionality may become more fluid, with platforms providing environments where capabilities can be created, modified, and governed dynamically.
