MADRID -- Kylian Mbappé explained obscuring a T-shirt supporting Ceuta -- the Spanish city in a migration crisis -- before Real Madrid's Tuesday match, saying he doesn't "want to prioritize one form of suffering over another."

Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior and Ibrahima Konaté covered part of the message on shirts given ahead of the 3-2 La Liga win at Elche, drawing criticism. Tensions in Ceuta, a Spanish enclave on the north African coast, grew in July when tens of thousands crossed from Morocco.

La Liga, Elche and Madrid agreed players would wear shirts reading "We're all from Ceuta," but the three rolled them up. "I stand in full solidarity with Ceuta and all the victims," Mbappé told Diario AS. "But I also wanted to acknowledge all the migrants who've lost their lives. I don't want to prioritize one form of suffering over another."

Mbappé's mother is of Algerian descent; his father emigrated from Cameroon to France. On Monday, Real Betis forward Abde Ezzalzouli was criticized by some Moroccan fans after Betis and Villarreal wore Ceuta shirts.
