Xbox Introduces Time Limits for Cloud Gaming Streaming

Microsoft Xbox is introducing time limits to its cloud gaming feature starting in November, ending unlimited streaming for Game Pass Ultimate subscribers. Under the new plan, Game Pass Ultimate subscribers get 15 hours of streaming per month, Game Pass Premium members receive 10 hours, and Game Pass Essential subscribers receive five hours. Xbox estimates this change will only impact four percent of Game Pass subscribers.

However, the new system allows anyone to purchase cloud playtime hours through the Xbox Store, enabling even Xbox One owners to stream eligible Xbox Series X/S games without upgrading hardware. The pricing for purchased playtime hours will vary by market. This shift comes under new CEO Asha Sharma, who has pivoted Xbox away from its original vision of console-free gaming, lowering subscription prices while recommitting to exclusive games and hardware.

The irony is that rising hardware costs make cloud gaming increasingly attractive compared to upcoming Project Helix consoles.
