The LiDAR sensor on certain iPhone Pro models helps the device measure the distance and shape of nearby objects using invisible pulses of light. Apple introduced the LiDAR Scanner with the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max in 2020, and it has remained exclusive to Pro models through the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The sensor works alongside the cameras to provide depth information that apps and iOS features use for measuring objects, scanning rooms, and improving autofocus in low light.

There is no dedicated LiDAR app or toggle in Settings; compatible apps call on the sensor automatically when needed. You can experiment with it using the built-in Measure app, which offers features like automatic edge guides and height measurement on supported models. Apps built on Apple's Room Plan framework can also create 3D room models using LiDAR data.
