Snap Specs Hands-On: Standalone AR Glasses Review

Snap has finally released its first consumer-ready AR glasses, the $2,195 Specs, marking a significant bet for the company after a decade of experimentation. The glasses replicate much of the functionality of a mixed reality headset without requiring a separate puck, controller, or tethered connection. However, this capability comes with trade-offs, most notably the device's size and weight, which clock in at 132 grams.

The fit and look are subjective; the frames come in 47 mm and 52 mm sizes, with the smaller option offering a better fit. While not "normal" looking, the chunkier design is comparable to other AR products like Xreal's Aura. The weight feels evenly distributed, and the snug fit prevents slipping. The operating system feels more polished, featuring hand-tracking controls via two front-facing cameras. Users point with their index finger to move a cursor and pinch to select. A notable improvement is the ability for AR content to "anchor" and follow the user as they move through a space, aided by a 51-degree field of view. The display is bright and adjustable, though visibility varies with ambient lighting.

Despite the polished interface and useful apps, questions remain regarding the product's target audience. The glasses represent Snap's most capable standalone AR offering to date, balancing advanced features with a distinct, bulky aesthetic.
