The economy of Kyrgyzstan grew by 11 percent last year, partly due to becoming a key conduit for goods flowing into Russia following sanctions. This re-export activity, attributed 30 to 40 percent of growth by the Asian Development Bank over the past four years, has transformed the capital Bishkek into a boomtown. New infrastructure, including the Royal Tower skyscraper and 24 simultaneous construction projects, reflects this frenzied development.

Much of the wealth has flowed into real estate, with high-end buyers investing in complexes like Monte Carlo and Brooklyn. The state mortgage company has extended discounted loans to public sector workers. However, the surge in growth has coincided with political consolidation.

Since rising to power in 2020, President Sadyr Japarov, a Kremlin ally, has cracked down on independent media and opposition, ending the nation's democratic aspirations. Despite the economic prosperity, fears linger that the boom is built on fragile trade rerouting rather than sustainable development. South Asian workers have flooded local construction sites, a stark contrast for Kyrgyz citizens accustomed to working abroad.

As drilling echoes across the capital, the skyline fills with cranes, symbolizing a rapid transformation fueled by geopolitical shifts.
