US Open 2026: Zverev, Shelton Face Late-Night Semi-Final Effects

New York is the city that never sleeps, and this year's US Open has lived up to that reputation with multiple matches finishing in the early hours. Men's semi-finalists Ben Shelton and Alexander Zverev have been particularly affected.

Zverev, the top seed, has had three of his five matches finish past 1am. "I've been to bed as late as 6:45am in the past week so I'm kind of a bit jet-lagged," he said. "I feel like I'm playing the Australian Open in New York right now." His semi-final against Karen Khachanov will be his first daytime match this tournament.

Shelton, the eighth seed, did not finish his quarter-final win over Carlos Alcaraz until 3:34am on Wednesday. He faces Frances Tiafoe in Friday's night session. Matt Little, Andy Murray's former strength and conditioning coach, told BBC Sport: "The advantage of the opponent who has played earlier in the day will be big - they've had that full evening's rest and a good night's sleep."

Murray described a similar situation at the 2023 Australian Open as a "farce". The Australian Open cut day-session matches from three to two, and the ATP and WTA created rules preventing tour matches starting after 23:00, but these do not apply at the majors. Last week, Venus Williams and Sofia Kenin began their first-round match at 12:13am - the latest start in US Open history.
