CASTLE ROCK, Colo. -- Joe Sakic will remain general manager of the Colorado Avalanche indefinitely, a person with knowledge told The Associated Press on Monday. Sakic, already president of hockey operations, added the GM title in June after Chris Mac Farland left for the Nashville Predators.

Sakic built the Avalanche team that won the 2022 Stanley Cup. As a player, he led Colorado to titles in 1996 and 2001. He is the only Hall of Famer to win a Cup as captain and GM with the same franchise.

Sakic made Cale Makar the highest-paid player in NHL history with a $163.2 million, eight-year extension. He traded Valeri Nichushkin to Columbus and brought in Jaden Schwartz.

Colorado won the Presidents' Trophy last season before being swept by Vegas. The team gathered Monday for a charity golf tournament and starts training camp this week.
