Satechi CubeDock Review: Thunderbolt 5 Dock with SSD Enclosure

Accessory maker Satechi launched its first Thunderbolt 5 dock this year, the CubeDock, priced at $400. Housed in a silver, 5‑by‑5‑inch, 2‑inch‑thick chassis that mimics the Mac mini, it aims to blend seamlessly with Apple gear. The front panel offers a 30 W USB‑C, 7.5 W USB‑A, 3.5 mm audio jack, and SD/microSD slots, while the rear hosts a 2.5 Gb Ethernet, a primary 80/120 Gbps Thunderbolt 5 host port and three additional 80 Gbps Thunderbolt 5 ports.

Below the unit, a removable panel accepts up to 8TB NVMe SSDs in 2230‑2280 form factors, delivering up to 6000 MB/s. Installation needs a pre‑positioned screw and a thermal pad supplied by Satechi. An 180 W external brick powers the fan and LED button; the fan emits a faint electronic whine that some notice, though temperatures stay near a hand‑warmer level.

The CubeDock drives up to three 8K displays at 60 Hz on Windows, while Apple silicon limits M5 Pro/Max Macs to three 6K screens and earlier chips to two. Testing with a 5K Studio Display and a 4K 120 Hz OLED performed well, even while charging two iPhones and moving files to an internal SSD. For Mac users needing a hub with ports, the dock delivers that.
