Samsung Launches Galaxy Card to Rival Apple Card

Samsung launched the Samsung Galaxy Card via press release Monday, seven years after the Apple Card debut. The virtual-first card is issued by Barclays on the Visa network, with a physical black metal option available. Cash back is managed in Samsung Wallet: 5% on Samsung purchases, 3% on virtual Samsung Wallet transactions, 2% on streaming services, and 1% elsewhere.

By comparison, Apple Card offers 3% on Apple and select partners, 2% on Apple Pay purchases, and 1% on physical card use. Samsung Wallet only works on Samsung devices, not Android broadly, limiting the 3% virtual rate's reach. The card isn't a direct Apple Card competitor — ecosystem lock-in prevents switching.

Apple Card is transitioning to Chase by 2027-2028 after Goldman Sachs exited consumer lending. Samsung's CEO calls this the start of broader fintech ambitions. Real-world value depends on Samsung Wallet acceptance online, which appears less ubiquitous than Apple Pay. Higher rates on paper mainly benefit heavy Samsung hardware buyers.
