Meta's AI Can Use Your Public Instagram Photos

Meta is introducing Muse Image, an AI model that can generate images using public photos and reels from Instagram accounts. This feature is enabled by default for all non-private Instagram profiles. Users can @-mention an Instagram account within the Meta AI app to incorporate that account's public imagery into new AI-generated visuals.

Meta states that content from public accounts can be repurposed for AI features without user notification. While private accounts are excluded, the opt-out setting for public accounts is also enabled by default. Users can disable this permission by navigating to Instagram settings, selecting 'Sharing and Reuse,' and toggling off 'Posts' and 'Reels' under the AI features section.

The company plans to roll out Muse Image to Facebook and Messenger soon, with advertisers and agencies gaining access to create content in the coming weeks. Meta is also developing a Muse Video feature. The current AI-generated content created before opting out will not be deleted, and the opt-out toggle may not be immediately visible as the feature continues its rollout.
