Meta Unveils Instagram Instants, a New Way to Share Ephemeral Photos

Meta rolled out Instants, a new Instagram feature that lets users send single‑shot photos that vanish after a 24‑hour window or once seen. Unlike Stories, Instants block edits, filters, or stickers, and disappear from the feed, appearing only in Direct Messages. The images archive for a year and can later be reposted to Stories in the platform's archive for future reference.

To access Instants, users tap a new icon in the bottom right of their Direct inbox. Photos may target close friends or mutual followers, and the app blocks screenshots and screen recordings, adding a privacy layer. Meta labels the feature for everyday snaps, positioning it against Snapchat while limiting the companion app to a handful of countries as an experiment.

Instants appear globally today, with the standalone companion app available in supported regions. The feature mirrors Instagram’s existing Stories but strips away creative tools, emphasizing spontaneous sharing. By funneling reactions into Direct Messages, Meta tightens control over content flow and ties the new format to its broader messaging ecosystem, potentially reshaping how users exchange fleeting moments for every day on.
