iOS 26.3 Adds Privacy Feature to Limit Carrier Location Tracking

Apple is rolling out a new privacy feature in iOS 26.3 that allows users to limit the precision of location data shared with mobile carriers. This setting restricts carriers from accessing precise location details, such as a street address, instead providing a general neighborhood location. The update aims to give users more control over their data.

This new feature is designed to enhance user privacy by reducing the amount of location information available to cellular networks. Only certain carriers, including Boost Mobile in the U.S., and EE and BT in the UK, will initially support the feature. The feature requires devices with Apple-designed C1 or C1X modems, like the iPhone Air, iPhone 16e, and cellular iPad Pro.

To enable the setting, users can navigate to their cellular service settings and toggle on "Limit Precise Location." Apple claims the feature won't affect signal quality or user experience, nor will it impact location data shared with emergency services. iOS 26.3 is currently in beta and expected to launch publicly soon.

This move by Apple reflects a growing trend towards user privacy and data control within the tech industry. As concerns about data collection and tracking intensify, companies are increasingly offering users more control over their personal information. The fact that the list of supported carriers is limited suggests that wider adoption may take time.
