Apple's iOS 26 introduces a powerful new call screening feature called 'Ask Reason for Calling,' designed to combat the growing nuisance of spam and cold calls. Functioning like a personal digital receptionist, this tool automatically intercepts calls from numbers not saved in your Contacts. Instead of your phone ringing, the system answers with a polite automated message, asking the caller to state their name and reason for contact.

The caller's response is then transcribed into text and displayed on your screen, allowing you to make an informed decision to accept, decline, or request more details. This is a significant upgrade from the previous 'Silence Unknown Callers' option, which simply sent such calls to voicemail. The new feature ensures legitimate callers, such as doctors or delivery services, can still get through, while spammers who refuse to identify themselves are effectively filtered out.

To enable it, users can navigate to Settings, select Apps, choose Phone, and tap 'Ask Reason for Calling' under the Screen Unknown Callers section. This development represents a major step forward in user privacy and control over mobile communication.
