Google Debuts Android 17 With Gemini Intelligence Ahead of iOS 27

Google previewed Android 17 today, branding its new AI features Gemini Intelligence in a direct parallel to Apple Intelligence. The update positions Android as an intelligence system rather than just an OS, with proactive on-device AI handling tasks autonomously — booking classes, purchasing items, and pulling context from whatever's on screen. Gemini can build shopping carts from notes app lists, summarize web content in Chrome, and autofill fields using Gmail and Google Photos data.

A voice dictation tool called Rambler strips filler words like um and ah from recordings. Android 17 arrives about a month before Apple's expected iOS 27 reveal, giving Google an early window to define the AI conversation. Gemini Intelligence rolls out first on the latest Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones this summer, with Chrome features landing in late June.

Android Auto gains expanded Gemini support and a Material 3 Expressive refresh, adding edge-to-edge Google Maps and YouTube playback when parked. Google partnered with Meta to improve Instagram photo and video quality on Android, and introduced Pause Point, a digital wellness tool requiring a 10-second cooldown before opening designated apps. Cars with Google built-in get Zoom access and vehicle-specific Gemini responses.
