Apple's AI Chief Giannandrea Exits After 8 Years

Apple's John Giannandrea is leaving the company after eight years, with his departure expected around April 15 when his stock options vest. The former Google AI executive joined Apple in 2018 to lead Siri and AI initiatives, but his role diminished significantly after Apple restructured its AI leadership in 2025.

Giannandrea's responsibilities were gradually stripped away, with Siri control transferred to Mike Rockwell and other executives taking over AI foundation models and testing. His advisory role after announcing retirement in December 2025 appears to have been largely ceremonial, with responsibilities divided among Craig Federighi, Eddy Cue, and COO Sabih Khan.

Despite the quiet exit, Giannandrea's work continues to influence Apple's AI strategy. His tenure saw Apple shift focus from ambitious projects like the Apple Car to backend machine learning and AI features. The timing of his departure, coinciding with stock vesting, suggests Apple's typical "rest and vest" approach for departing executives rather than any dramatic falling out.
