Apple Tests Chinese Memory Chips Amid Supply Concerns

Apple is reportedly testing DRAM memory chips from China's state-backed ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT). This move signifies progress beyond initial discussions, with Apple running CXMT's chips through technical validation processes.

CXMT has rapidly grown into the world's fourth-largest DRAM producer, holding approximately 11% of global capacity. This testing could allow Apple to tap into this growing supply as needed, especially as DRAM contract prices surged significantly in early 2026 due to AI server demand. Qualifying CXMT would offer Apple leverage in negotiations with existing suppliers like Samsung and Micron, and provide a hedge against further price increases.

Both CXMT and rival Yangtze Memory Technologies (YMTC) are on a Pentagon roster linking them to the Chinese military, though this primarily affects defense contracts. Apple is reportedly lobbying the U.S. administration for assurances that CXMT will not face stricter U.S. export controls, a concern stemming from a previous shelved attempt in 2022. CEO Tim Cook is framing the potential use of these chips for devices sold in the Chinese market specifically.
