Apple Tests Blacklisted Chinese RAM Supplier

Apple is reportedly testing DRAM chips from CXMT, a Chinese supplier blacklisted by the U.S. government. This move aims to alleviate the current RAM pricing crisis, though its impact is expected to be minimal.

The company petitioned the Trump administration in late June for permission to purchase memory from CXMT. While awaiting a decision, Apple is allegedly evaluating the quality of CXMT's chips for potential use in iPhones and other devices sold in China.

CXMT, a significant global DRAM producer, has received substantial government subsidies from China. Despite its production capacity, the U.S. blacklist, citing national security concerns due to alleged ties to the People's Liberation Army, complicates Apple's procurement plans. Even if granted permission, Apple would be unable to supply U.S. government contracts.

Analysts suggest this effort represents a temporary fix to a persistent issue. While CXMT's inclusion could marginally ease pricing, its global market share is limited, and demand remains high. The broader memory industry's production capacity must expand significantly to address the long-term supply constraints.
