Apple internally developed two Mac Pro projects that never reached market, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. In his latest "Power On" newsletter, Gurman revealed codenames J170 and J190 and explained that the line was ultimately discontinued.

The former, an Intel‑based Mac Pro, showed Apple still testing an x86 option for niche workflows even after its transition to Apple silicon. The latter was a M3 Ultra‑equipped machine slated to debut with the M3 Ultra Mac Studio in early 2025 but was shelved before release.

Neither model shipped, and Apple announced the end of the Mac Pro’s 20‑year run this year. The legacy Pro had been stuck on the aging M2 Ultra, while the Mac Studio continued to receive updates and was roughly twice the price of a similarly configured Studio.

These cancellations add to a growing list of shelved Mac Pro plans, including the earlier "Extreme" chip variants. Gurman said Apple is unlikely to revive the Pro "anytime soon—if ever," and the company is expected to refresh the Mac Studio with M5 Ultra chips as early as fall.
