AirTag Lawsuits Mount Against Apple

Apple confronts over 30 lawsuits alleging AirTags were used for stalking after a 2022 class action failed. Each lawsuit claims Apple released the device knowing abusive individuals could use it to track, coerce, and control victims. Multiple incidents referenced, including some ending in murder.

Apple received more than 40,000 stalking reports between April 2021 and April 2024. Internal documents show the company knew safeguards would only "deter as opposed to prevent malicious use" and admitted it "should have consulted domestic abuse organizations." Apple added cross-platform notifications, but plaintiffs note 4-8 hour delays.

The lawsuits include personal stories and seek damages, attorney's fees, and an order preventing Apple's alleged unlawful practices. The 2022 lawsuit was denied class certification due to differing state laws, prompting plaintiffs to file separate lawsuits within 28 days.
