How to Detect If an AirTag Is Secretly Tracking You

Apple's AirTag is designed to help people track personal belongings like keys and luggage, but concerns about unwanted tracking are understandable. Apple has built multiple safeguards into the AirTag and Find My network to alert users if a tracker they don't own appears to be moving with them. These alerts work through notifications on both iPhone and Android devices.

For iPhone users, tracking alerts are enabled by default but require specific settings: iOS 17.5 or later, Bluetooth enabled, Location Services active, and notifications allowed. The system can detect AirTags, compatible Find My accessories, and certain AirPods models. When an unknown tracker is detected, users receive notifications like 'AirTag Found Moving With You' or 'Unknown Accessory Detected,' which open the Find My app showing where the item was detected nearby.

If you hear an unfamiliar chirping sound or receive an alert, you can use the Find My app to play a sound on the device or use Precision Finding if your iPhone supports ultra wideband. For Android users, Tracker Detect app allows manual scanning for AirTags. If you confirm an AirTag is tracking you, you can disable it by removing the battery. Apple states it will provide information to authorities when legally required for malicious tracking cases.
