Xiaomi’s 18 Pro line swaps 200MP periscope for shorter zoom

Xiaomi plans to launch the Mi 18 Pro and Mi 18 Pro Max this September, a year after the 17 series. Leaked specs reveal both flagships will share a new 200MP periscope telephoto sensor with an 85mm focal length, a step down from the 115mm lens on the 17 Pro models. The shorter optics suggest a marketed 3x‑3.5x optical zoom instead of last year’s 5x.

To compensate for the reduced optical reach, Xiaomi is likely to tout “lossless” digital zoom extending to 6x or 7x, leveraging the higher‑resolution sensor. Both devices will run on the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro chipset, promising performance gains over the current flagship SoC. Battery capacity should rise, with the 18 Pro slated for at least a 7,000 mAh cell.

The 18 Pro is rumored to sport a 6.3‑inch display, while the Pro Max will grow to 6.9 inches with slimmer bezels than its predecessor. These size bumps, combined with the new camera approach, hint at Xiaomi’s strategy to balance flagship photography bragging rights with slimmer, longer‑lasting devices. Consumers can expect a more balanced trade‑off between zoom capability and battery life.
