WhatsApp is testing a dedicated Contacts tab in its Android app, available in the latest beta version via Google Play Store. The feature is still in development and not yet available to all users. The new tab appears in the app's navigation bar and displays contacts with online status indicated by a green dot.
It also shows birthday reminders, including a cake emoji and 'Birthday today' for those celebrating, pulled directly from the phone’s contacts. Users can invite new people to WhatsApp through this tab. A search bar at the top allows filtering by name, number, or username.
The contact list can be sorted by activity (prioritizing online users) or alphabetically. Users who have disabled their 'last seen' status will not appear as online, even if they are active. The update aims to improve contact discovery and engagement within the app.
