Nintendo is updating its Switch 2 console to feature user-replaceable batteries, a change driven by upcoming European Union regulations. Starting this autumn, new Switch 2 units sold in the EU and several other regions will include batteries that consumers can swap out themselves.

The updated console will house a 5,172mAh battery, a slight decrease from the current 5,220mAh cell. This change results in the revised Switch 2 weighing 10 grams more, reaching 401 grams. The accompanying Joy-Con 2 controllers will also receive user-replaceable batteries.

This move is a direct response to the EU's Right to Repair Directive and the EU Batteries Regulation, which mandate easily removable batteries for consumer electronics. Nintendo is also extending this feature to updated versions of its Pro, N64, and Game Cube controllers, with the new Pro controller arriving this winter featuring a 16% smaller-capacity battery.
