Smartphone Prices Set to Jump 30% as Memory Costs Surge

Smartphone prices are heading for a major spike in 2026 as memory component costs skyrocket. According to Counterpoint Research, mobile RAM prices have jumped 50% quarter-on-quarter while NAND storage has surged over 90% QoQ. These dramatic increases are forcing manufacturers to pass costs to consumers.

Low-end devices are taking the biggest hit, with memory now consuming 43% of a sub-$200 phone's Bill of Materials - up 25% from last quarter. A typical budget phone with 6GB LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB eMMC storage is seeing massive cost pressure. Mid-range phones aren't immune either, with manufacturers spending 15-20% more on RAM and 11-16% more on storage compared to Q1.

Premium devices may have better margins to absorb some increases, but even flagships face challenges with expensive 2nm chipsets. Counterpoint estimates that a high-end phone with 16GB LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB UFS 4.1 storage will see BoM costs rise by $100-$150 in Q2. The research firm predicts low-end phones will cost around $30 more, while premium models could jump $150-$200. As Senior Analyst Shenghao Bai notes, manufacturers relying on entry-level models for market share face significant risk of short-term losses.
