Apple's component suppliers have begun production for the iPhone 18 Pro's new variable aperture camera system. China's Sunny Optical has reportedly started manufacturing actuators that control the iris in the Pro and Pro Max lenses, marking a significant hardware upgrade for Apple's flagship smartphones.

This feature allows users to adjust the depth of field in photos, similar to how Portrait mode works in software but with actual hardware control. A shallow depth of field isolates subjects from backgrounds, while a deep depth of field keeps everything in focus - useful for landscapes and cityscapes. The variable aperture has been rumored for years but now appears to be finally arriving.

The production timeline shows Apple's complex supply chain in action. Sunny Optical needs to manufacture these actuators now so LG Innotech can assemble the camera modules by June or July. This backward planning through the supply chain is standard for Apple's annual iPhone releases, but the variable aperture represents one of the most significant camera hardware improvements in recent years.
