iPhone 18 Pro Modem Split Revealed Post-Tata Hack

Apple's upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will feature a split modem strategy, according to leaked documents from a cyberattack on supplier Tata. US models will continue using Qualcomm modems, primarily because they support mmWave 5G, a capability Apple's in-house modems reportedly still lack. This reliance on Qualcomm for US variants highlights a persistent technical hurdle for Apple's modem development.

Models sold internationally, however, will incorporate Apple's own C2 modem. This move signifies a step towards Apple's long-term goal of replacing Qualcomm entirely, though the current limitations of their custom-designed chips prevent a global rollout. The iPhone 17 series already uses a mix of Apple and Qualcomm modems, indicating this dual-sourcing approach is becoming standard.

Beyond modems, the leaked documents also suggest the iPhone 18 Pro will adopt a new camera sensor, likely a custom Sony IMX905, hinting at potential variable aperture functionality. Furthermore, Apple may introduce eSIM support for China, a significant shift from the dual physical SIM slots currently used in iPhones sold there.

This modem strategy indicates Apple is still some way from achieving full modem independence, particularly for high-frequency 5G. The reliance on Qualcomm for the critical US market persists, while international markets will receive Apple's own, albeit less capable, solution.
