iOS 27 leak reveals standalone Siri app and AI writing upgrades

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has outlined what to expect from iOS 27 ahead of WWDC 2026, which kicks off June 8. The headline feature is a standalone Siri app designed as a ChatGPT and Claude-style chatbot, positioned as an ad-free, all-in-one assistant with conversation history and auto-deleting chats.

The Siri overhaul reportedly relies on Apple Foundation Models but leans on Google Gemini for more demanding AI tasks, meaning Google handles data security for complex queries. Apple's privacy-first approach delayed the assistant as the company worked to keep user data on its own servers rather than routing everything through third parties.

iOS 27 also brings new system-wide AI writing tools with a "Write With Siri" keyboard toggle and a "Help Me Write" option triggered inside text fields. Shortcuts gets an overhaul supporting natural language prompts, while Photos gains AI wallpaper generation and editing tools.

The updates reflect Apple's long-standing tension between privacy and competitive AI features, forcing the company to forge an uneasy partnership with Google to deliver the assistant consumers have been waiting for.
