India boosted smartphone output 8% year-over-year in 2025, with exports powering most gains while domestic demand edged up 1%. Plants churned out devices for global buyers even as local sales stayed muted, positioning electronics as the third-largest export category in fiscal 2025. Foxconn Hon Hai delivered standout momentum with 48% YoY growth, helping Apple tighten its grip on Indian assembly lines.

Tata Electronics joined Apple’s export push, while Samsung managed only 4% export growth against the broader surge. Dixon Technologies rode orders for Motorola, Realme and Xiaomi to a staggering 89% leap, and Bhagwati Products absorbed vivo’s outsourcing shift alongside Oppo and Realme demand. Exports claimed one-third of all Indian-made smartphones, lifting the sector past established categories.

Memory chip prices are climbing, the US-Iran war threatens logistics, and India’s own smartphone market is poised to contract, squeezing margins for assemblers. Analysts urge a pivot toward laptops and tablets to secure longer runway. Make in India now confronts a narrower path where export muscle must offset fading local appetite.
