Google took the wraps off Wear OS 7 at its I/O 2026 conference, basing the new smartwatch OS on Android 17. The update brings widgets, Live Updates, and Gemini Intelligence to select smartwatches, alongside a claimed 10 percent boost in battery life over Wear OS 6. Smartwatch battery drain has been a persistent complaint, so any improvement here matters for everyday users.

Widgets arrive in 2x1 and 2x2 layouts mirroring Android phone formats, while Live Updates let apps push real-time info to watch faces. System media controls see upgrades with per-app auto-launch and the Remote Output Switcher for smoother audio routing. A new Wear Workout Tracker standardizes fitness tracking, and Watch Face Format v5 adds more face customization options.

Google is also baking in task automation, letting users issue voice commands to place DoorDash orders or complete other actions. Developers can test the platform now via the Wear OS 7 Canary Emulator, with a full release coming later this year.
