Google AI Mode Windows App Goes Global

Google has expanded its experimental Windows app with AI Mode to users worldwide, though it currently supports only English. The app, which debuted last September, now lets Windows users access Google's AI capabilities directly through a dedicated application. This move brings Google's AI search features to the desktop environment, competing with similar offerings from Microsoft and Apple.

The app introduces a convenient Alt+Space keyboard shortcut to summon a small overlay window, similar to macOS Spotlight. Users can search the web, ask questions about specific windows or their entire screen, and leverage Google Lens for visual searches. The ability to share screenshots or selected content with Google's AI allows for more contextual and accurate responses, whether translating text, analyzing images, or getting help with tasks.

This global rollout marks Google's push to integrate AI more deeply into desktop workflows. By offering screen-sharing and window-specific queries, Google aims to make its AI assistant more versatile than traditional search. The expansion suggests Google sees desktop AI as a key battleground, especially as competitors like Microsoft continue enhancing their own AI-powered search and assistance features.
