X Vows UK Hate Content Crackdown

X has committed to reducing hate and terror content in the UK, promising faster review processes and account access restrictions for illegal material. The platform will assess terrorist and hate content "on average within 24 hours" or ensure 85% is reviewed within 48 hours. These pledges came from discussions with Ofcom, which specifically asked platforms to tackle persisting illegal content.

The commitment stands in contrast to X's actual performance after Elon Musk's acquisition, when a UC Berkeley study found hate speech increased by 50 percent. Ofcom director Oliver Griffiths emphasized the need for action, particularly following recent hate crimes against the UK's Jewish community. The regulator continues investigating Grok AI for harmful content generation.

Ofcom will review X's performance quarterly over the next year. The regulator recently fined 4chan nearly $700,000 for Online Safety Act violations. While X makes these commitments, the article questions whether the platform will follow through given Musk's history of posting racist content on his own platform.
